CHARACTER INFO

Character: Drayton
Canon: Pokemon Scarlet / Violet
Age: Roughly 17

Background Information: Wiki link.

Personality:
- "This is Drayton... and he's the worst."

"Beautiful intro. Thanks."

1)  Tell us about who your character is and what someone’s first impression would be upon meeting them.
Originally a resident of Opelucid City in Unova, Drayton was born into a well-established family of Dragon-type Pokemon trainers. His grandfather Drayden serves as the city's Gym Leader, and his grandfather's young ward Iris became the region's Champion when she was barely a teenager. A family of that level of high esteem is always going to be an interesting environment to be raised in, and as for Drayton... well. He's an interesting resultant case, that's for sure.

Now attending Blueberry Academy as a second-year student, Drayton has resolved to not worry about any of his family's expectations of him. Self-purported to be "not made for learning in classrooms", he has been a second-year for three years now, having been held back thrice due to his absolutely abysmal grades that can primarily be attributed to his basically non-existent attendance record. First impressions of him tend to vary - within the game, the Player has the assistance of some of Drayton's fellow club members to quickly be informed of his negatives, but generally he's a friendly enough conversationalist. Casually dressed, from his unzipped tracksuit and the cape tied skirt-like around his waist, he tends to slouch, drape and lean on anything that will take his weight rather than relying on holding himself up. His style of speech matches these mannerisms, an easy drawl peppered with slang and dry jokes.

Even so, it becomes quickly apparent that Drayton is far from stupid. His laid-back manner and lackadaisical attitude serve to distract from a clever analytical mind and a sharp tongue. The veil of airiness and bouts of flirtatious quips hide his ability to thoroughly read people and formulate plans, but hints of his true level of intelligence slip through within his wording and conspicuous attention to detail. Though his fellow club members are frequent to insult him - from "slovenly and unreliable" to "annoying toothpaste-haired bozo" - they're also fully aware of, and quick to mention, his tendency for tricks and manipulation. The whole club also respects his abilities as a Pokemon trainer, none able to deny his strength in battle.

2) What is a driving force your character has? What goals do they have, what motivates them, etc?
Motivation? Bordering on a foreign concept to Drayton. In a conversation with Geeta, the Paldea region's Top Champion, he rebuffs her intentions to scout him for the Paldea Elite Four by claiming that he's the wrong person to be talking about "future stuff", and all he really cares about is "enjoying the here and now". That said, he's always up for a Pokemon battle, being able to be rebattled once per day after the end of the story. The flow of a fight genuinely fires him up, and his animations are more lively when sending out Pokemon or preparing to Terastallize than any other time in the game, with excitable little jumps every time he throws a Pokeball.

Behind his talent for battle is another aspect he will actually work hard at - Drayton clearly has some discipline, in order to raise his dragons. The Dragon-type is frequently described in-universe as the hardest type to raise, with Dragons being rare, powerful, and often requiring significant time and effort to make evolve. Drayton's team is not only strong, it's well-constructed regarding choices in Held Items and movesets.

On a deeper level, the hypocritical inaction of the BB League members during Kieran's uncomfortable reign as League Champion did spur him into reacting. Drayton was quick to realise that Kieran's newfound obsession with power was not only disrupting the mood of the BB League, but that it was headed down a self-destructive spiral for Kieran himself. Upon realising quickly that the Player might be able to actually defeat Kieran where he and the others had failed, his opportunistic sense - "proactive nonchalance" - strikes with no hesitation. Thankfully, despite how the other members of the BB League actively complain about him, they still appear to be on relatively good terms. Carmine is (almost) willing to lend him her notes (and only isn't because he'd crumpled them in the past), Amarys holds him with some respect, Lacey's scolding is more exasperated than truly annoyed, and Crispin seems surprised to learn that Drayton was even doing anything remotely sneaky in the first place, warning him to "stop acting the villain, before people actually think you're a bad guy!"

3)  What are their flaws as a character? What is something they've messed up, or have done that they regret?
It's a fairly obvious flaw that Drayton lacks drive. Coasting through life in order to escape the pressure of expectation is leading to him stagnating, and while he claims that this doesn't bother him (being held back just lets him "savor the sweet school life longer than everyone else"!), when this problem is mentioned to him by a family friend he gets quite defensive about it. Even though he tends to talk himself up - calling himself a "charming catch", describing battling him as the final Elite Four challenge "saving the best for last" - it seems that he does carry a little bit of concern over how others perceive him, and commonly deflects with banter.

While everyone, including the Player, knew that Drayton's insistence that they join the League was hiding an agenda, he didn't actually intend to use the Player for this goal from the outset. Now settled back into a more comfortable environment, Drayton has apologised for his manipulative actions and thanked them for their help. That said, given the other League member's knowledge of his sneakiness, this trait isn't something he only just manifested - though perhaps this was its biggest showing.

4) Optional: What is something unique and interesting about them, or what is a fun little tidbit that sets them apart from the crowd?
- He is always in the BB League clubroom after the conclusion of the main plotline, showing that he really does never go to class.
- His Japanese name, Kakitsubata, is a type of iris. This matches Iris (obviously) and Drayden's Japanese name, Shaga. The three also have purple motif colours.
- The snacks all over the clubroom tables belong mostly to Drayton, and he tends not to finish them. The Player is offered free reign over the snacks as an incentive to join, but Carmine quickly let them know they're probably all stale.
- While the other members of the BB League use alternatives, Drayton's Pokemon are all in standard Pokeballs. This implies that he just never bothers to upgrade his item kit, despite the struggle to catch Dragon-types with traditionally low catch rates - or, possibly, that his Pokemon were raised from Eggs.

Abilities & Inventory: Drayton, physically, is a completely average teenage boy with zero supernatural powers. However, he is a Champion-level battler with a keen strategic mind. While he no longer (and if you ask him, never did officially!) holds the title of Champion, he is still the highest-ranked member of the BB League Elite Four.
With him, Drayton will have his clothes, his Tera Orb, and a single Pokeball containing his Archaludon. His standard roster is as follows, and the Pokemon aside from Archaludon will have to be earned as regains.

ARMADA SELECTION

While undecided for now, Drayton will be likely to join the Corsairs. Retaining his freedom is important to him, and the more rigid style of the Paladins might rub him the wrong way. It's less about what the Corsairs do as much as what they don't do. That said, he's free-spirited, and will not be a loyalist by any means.
